Approach

Haden Young operates an integrated Health, Safety and Environmental Management System, which complies with the requirements of OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001-2004.

The Haden Young Health, Safety and Environmental  Management System, which was developed in alignment with Balfour Beatty Group document Expectations for Managing Health and Safety comprises four “Parts”:

  • Part 1 : Overview
  • Part 2 : Health and Safety Management System
  • Part 3 : Environment Management System
  • Part 4 : Forms used for implementation

Haden Young has also established a Health, Safety and Welfare Policy to help focus our efforts and to demonstrate the Managing Director’s commitment to and support for health safety and the environment.  This policy is further supported by individual policies for Corporate Responsibility, Sustainable Development and the Environment.

Working with us

“People are our key resource and we believe that excellent health, safety and environmental standards will contribute towards their development and lead to excellent business performance”.

The above extract encapsulates our philosophy towards our employees who we see as our most valuable asset. We have almost two thousand direct employees who are well trained in our systems and used to adapting these to fit a wide range of clients and types of projects. They are well aware of the benefits of and need for high standards of health and safety.

Leadership & Communication

We believe that setting an example to our workforce and maintaining clear communications are paramount.

Commitment is demonstrated by regular review and updates of our HS&E Policies. The Managing Director issues an annual action plan directive to the Regional Directors. The action plan sets out corporate aims and objectives, along with strategies to achieve these. The Regional Directors specify the methods used and set measures and action parties. The regional teams then monitor and report on progress to the Managing Director every quarter.

Haden Young’s Managing Director and all of the company directors sit on health, safety and environmental committees. The series of structured meetings (four in each operating region/unit and four Company meetings) ensure a continuously high profile for health, safety and the environment.

Visible leadership is demonstrated by personal example. Directors and senior managers participate in site tours and inspections and leave written observations after site visits. Senior managers, including some directors have received training in the Tr@ction accident investigation software and procedures, in order to equip them to participate in accident investigations. The Managing Director also hosts operatives’ forums to openly discuss any issues. Health and safety is the first topic discussed on the agenda.

Functional responsibility for health, safety and the environment is taken by a substantial team of qualified health, safety and environmental professionals who provide advice and expertise to the Regional Directors and Managing Director.  The Haden Young Health, Safety and Environmental team can be contacted here.
