Caring for the health and safety of our people, our partners, our customers and the public is of paramount importance to Haden Young. Our Health and Safety Management System is focused on preventing injury and ill-health and promoting an effective health and safety culture.
Objectives & Targets
Haden Young has developed a long term Health and Safety Strategy with the following aims:
- Zero fatalities
- Zero permanently disabling injuries
- An Accident Frequency Ratio of 0.1 by end of 2010
Health
- Improve efficiency of Occupational Health Programme.
- Develop a policy for the management of long term sickness.
- Implement a managers stress awareness programme.
- Increase utilisation of MMS back injury referral service.
Safety
- Achieve an AFR of 0.18 for 2008.
- Increase new staff involvement in HS&E.
- Continue to implement Behavioural Safety Scheme.
- Reduce risk to members of the Public, due to Haden Young Activities.
- Consider 'Safety in Design'.
Environment
- Improve the processes of environmental reporting and monitoring.
- Improve Site Environmental Performance.
- Reduce the amount of on-site welding.
- Reduce use of diesel on site.
- Challenge the use of toxic chemicals for flushing.
These objectives are underpinned by action plans that direct and focus the Health and Safety programme. The action plans contain strategies and SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time based) targets that are monitored to ensure a continual and sustained effort on areas critical to achieving the objectives.
Safety Performance:
Haden Young continues to enjoy an unblemished reputation for legal compliance and this is exemplified by the fact that we have again been successful in the Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) annual awards. In 2007 three of our four operational regions won a Presidents Award, one region achieved an Order of Distinction and the Whole Company achieved a Highly Commended in the Construction Industry Sector Awards.
In 2007, over 85% of projects progress without a single RIDDOR Reportable injury. This is a considerable achievement, given the broad range of complex work that Haden Young undertakes and the challenging schedules that are often required.
To help drive further improvement and to meet our targets we have developed a series of positive (pro-active) key performance indicators (KPIs) that drive improvement. Indeed our Health, Safety and Welfare, Environmental, Corporate Responsibility and Sustainable Development Policies require that regional action plans include measurable KPIs. These ensure that line managers participate in the health, safety and environmental programme. For example they conduct their own detailed health, safety and environmental inspections (covering a range of specific topics) every month on every site. A target is set and monitored to ensure these meetings take place as planned.
Focusing on pro-active, or positive, KPIs allow us to measure success and the result is a reduction in the Accident Frequency Ratio. Our focus during 2008 is now on why small but unwelcome upward “blips” in performance may occasionally occur with Behavioural Safety being developed as a way of tackling this.
