In line with Haden Young's policy of integrating of health, safety and environmental management, a single external auditor has been appointed to review compliance with ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. Det Norske Veritas (DNV) is filling this role.
These audits are held every six months using the Balfour Beatty Group Audit Protocol. This is a detailed and rigorous exercise looking at every element of health, safety and the environment. The findings, recommendations and actions arising are input to the tr@ction system (an electronic database for managing accident and incident investigations and audits); to ensure proper follow up and close out in a timely manner. An internal audit programme supplements the external audits. Internal auditors have been trained in the use of the Group Audit Protocol
The audits are scheduled at the start of the year together with the range of meetings that are convened to review performance and to drive improvements.
Review of health, safety and environmental performance happens at several levels:
- Each site conducts regular Contract Control Procedure reviews, which include a detailed review of local performance
- Health, safety and environment committee meetings are held four times a year in each Region. These are chaired by Regional Directors and attended by workforce representatives.
- Company health, safety and environment committee meetings are held four times a year. These are chaired by the Managing Director and attendees include all of the company directors.
- In addition Haden Young representatives attend Balfour Beatty Group meetings to review, share and learn from other operating companies experiences:
- Group Health, Safety and Environment Managers meetings
- Group accident review meetings
- Building Services health and safety forum meetings
